Tess Mosko Scherer

“I am an observer of human nature and the natural world. As a child, I tried to make sense of the chaos. As an adult, I strive to do the same. Something deep within me is stirred when witnessing nature in its purest forms – from light’s illuminating beauty to the rawness of human emotional expression. To me both are equally poignant and beautiful.”

Tess Mosko Scherer’s unique work combines her interest in the study of human psychology, specifically the light and shadow theories of Carl Jung, with her interest in book arts. In her mixed-media work, Mosko Scherer excavates human emotions and archetypal energies that prevail in our human nature. She explores the imbalance between what goes on in our private inner world and the outer world in which we are seen. Simplified form and color convey complex and universal themes.

There is an intimate quality to her work which is revealed when experienced up close. Subtle detail, texture, and often words, are found in the compositions. She combines water color, pastels, colored pencils and graphite on hand-embossed paper, which is often torn. The torn pieces are sewn together with waxed Irish linen thread.

Mosko Scherer has a diverse background in the arts. She co-founded Scherer Gallery in 1983 and continues to maintain it online at SchererGallery.com, representing national and international contemporary artists; was the Artistic Director of Shemer Art Center and Museum from 2015-2017; and was named one of the ‘100 Creatives’ by the Phoenix New Times in 2016. Since 2012, she has served on the board of the Arizona Artists Guild as secretary, then treasurer, and currently, President. In addition to her studio practice, Mosko Scherer has a private practice coaching and mentoring artists. She is a member of several art organizations including the Sonoran Arts League, Art Link, Art Intersection and eye lounge collective galley. Her work is represented by Van Gogh’s Ear Gallery, Prescott, and The Red Dot Gallery, Cave Creek, and has won several awards in juried shows in Arizona.
