Crystal Phelps graduated from ASU in 2008 with her BFA in printmaking. While her background is heavily rooted in traditional printmaking processes her work has transformed to encompass central elements of drawing, painting, and site specific installation.
Abstracted anatomical imagery is being employed to address themes of love, loss, and impermanence that have been driving forces in my life. Narratives are revealed through each body of work and directly relates to these concepts. The interaction of shapes and spatial planes are used to create different emotional atmospheres that are reinforced with textural marks. I’m interested in creating work and atmospheres that are simultaneously beautiful and repulsive.
