Nick Hochstetler

Acclaimed English poet and brilliant short lyricist Alfred Tennyson said, "I am a part of all that I have
met." Fellow poet and author Frederick Buechner offered similar thoughts: "The life I touch for good or ill
will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far
place my touch will be felt."

Our individual lives consist of interwoven memories, exchanges and experiences with others -- a
framework that connects people and places to form one reaction-based association.
Community fuels my creativity, as the effect we have on one another is immeasurable and the
relationships humans maintain serve as ceaseless powering mechanisms. Hardly a concept unexplored,
the idea of community has always captivated the minds of writers, poets, thinkers and artists like myself.
Simple, complex and fundamentally relevant, it will likely forever provoke.

No one is autonomous. I'm interested in exploring this human experience and how individuals are
dependent on their surroundings.

My current work takes an interdisciplinary approach through the use of various raw materials including
wood, steel, aluminum and paint. Additionally I utilize found objects, machined parts, cast objects,
microcontrollers, motors, pneumatics, security cameras, televisions, sensors and custom circuitry to
create kinetic, performative and interactive installations. Through the use of these interactive elements,
along with portraiture and sculpture, I navigate intertwined accords we inevitably share and what
ultimately shape our apron-string existence.

Each day consists of events, discussions and reactions within an individual's community. No matter how
insignificant, this information is processed and logged, paired with those defining moments that happen
along the way that shake our foundations. My work explores connections between people, places, time,
individuality, memories, spirituality, space and materials. It's not always about creating, but about
noticing, focusing and distilling relationships.
