The eye lounge is celebrating it’s 10th year as a collective, artist-run, contemporary art space committed to fostering emerging and established visual artists in downtown Phoenix. To celebrate, the cooperative will bring together present and former members to show and sell their work at affordable prices.

At this once a year sale, there will be a variety of art pieces including paintings, ceramics, photography, and other art works at prices starting at only $40, with all prices under $200. Most of the work normally sells for prices at a substantially higher price, so it is an amazing opportunity for that perfect gift, or a one-of-a-kind original art piece for your home. It is also one of the best bargains in town for unique holiday shopping.

There will be an opening show at the eye lounge on Friday, November 20th starting with a viewing preview starting at 5pm, with sales opening at 7pm through 10pm. The sale will continue until December 12th. All sales will be final, so November 20th may be the best opportunity to get your first choice, as items will go fast.

All donated works from past and present Eye Lounge artists will be exhibited anonymously and offered for sale at various price points. This sale is one of the eye lounge’s major sources of income to support the space, and keeps the cooperative a vital artist community for the city of Phoenix. Gallery materials Eye Lounge will list the names and biographical information of the artists participating but the creator of each artwork will not be revealed until after purchase.

In addition, the eye lounge will also raffle more artwork for the price of $1 per entry, or 12 entries for $10. The winners will be announced at the end of the exhibit. These pieces will be announced December 12th, and will be valued at over $200. Raffle ticket sales begin on November 20th at 5pm. In addition, donations will be accepted to support the eye lounge.

The eye lounge is located at 419 East Roosevelt Street, was founded in 1999, and has had a permanent space on Roosevelt Row since 2001. This space is one of the premier destinations to view exciting and unique Arizona artists in downtown Phoenix. Current and previous members exhibit their work at major galleries around Arizona, and around the world.

a little history about us...
eye lounge is a collective artist-run contemporary art space in downtown Phoenix committed to fostering emerging and established local visual artists. Founded in 1999, eye lounge features new exhibitions every month.

about being a member...
Up to 22 member artists pay monthly dues, attend monthly meetings, and manage the gallery during the duration of his/her one month-long exhibition per year. Members sign a contract for 1 year and may be part of the collective for up to 3 years. Members are responsible for reception expenses, poster, invitations and postage for his/her one-month exhibit, and also help out with marketing, installation, sitting gallery hours, capital improvements and involvement with the artistic and local community. Attendance at monthly meetings, held every last Sunday of the month, is mandatory.

Current eye lounge members are interested in cultivating an exciting art space with varied viewpoints, mediums, backgrounds and audiences. The desire to participate in a collective environment is an integral part of being an eye lounge member. Collaborative projects, fundraisers and numerous committees have formed in the spirit of cooperation and mutual assistance. eye lounge does not depend on grant support or commercial sales; therefore member artists control the artistic environment and presentation of their work in the space. Members have one solo show per year, participate in the annual Art Detour group show and have numerous other opportunities.

eye lounge does not "represent" member artists. Many current members exhibit in various locations within the Phoenix Metro area and beyond.
It is strongly recommended that potential members attend gallery shows and talk with members to become better acquainted with the process.

application requirements...
- Digital Portfolio of 10-15 images of recent work. Images should be saved as JPEGS of no more than 1000 pixels in the long direction. Title: Lastname_00#.jpg. Please feel free to include installation and exhibition shots in addition to standard images. Applicants working in time-based media may submit digital video (Quicktime preferred) not to exceed 10 minutes in length saved on cross-platform formatted CD-Rom or DVD.

- Image list corresponding to the JPEGS should include title, size, media and dates for each work. This list may include brief annotations regarding the context, nature or related specificsfor works. (save as .doc or .pdf)

- Artist Resume/CV with contact info- less than three pages preferred (save as .doc or .pdf)

- Artist Statement (save as .doc or .pdf)

- Cover Letter stating why you're interested in becoming a member and what you would contribute to the collective. Cover letter can include a brief biography of the applicant. (save as .doc or .pdf). We are interested in the direction your work may be going, as well as what you are doing currently or have done in the past.

- Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope may be included only if applicant prefers materials to be returned.

Zac Zetterberg Exhibition Statement:
Corpuscles From the Cognitive Niche is a aggregation of oil paintings selected from Zac Zetterberg’s Wunderkammer. His interests in biology, physics, sound, and the unseen/unknown supply him with the information he uses to develop and arrange specimens into his personal cabinet of curiosities or Wunderkammer. Utilizing technical skill, instinctive subjectivity, and the imagination he strives to create something unfamiliar that straddles the periphery of rational thought.

Lisa Corine von Koch Artist Statement:
The artwork that I make is a testimony to my search for a point of reconciliation; an attempt to navigate through the paradox of having an environmentalist agenda and still being an object maker and user of materials. My work embodies the tension that I feel from being both a critic and participant in the intersection of nature and culture. As an artist whose primary focus is that of reverence for the natural world, I have recognized the hypocrisy of using materials that contribute to the degradation of the earth. I now primarily use natural materials such as beeswax, pigment, and plant material that comes from non-indigenous, water-needing flora found in Tempe, Arizona. In addition I incorporate manmade materials such as used water bottles, paper towels, receipts, junk mail, and scraps of canvas that I unravel. These materials testify to the wasteful decadence of our contemporary lifestyle, and can all be re-purposed into art material. Additionally, the poetic action of my performance work allows for direct engagement with the audience. By creating unforgettable scenes in outlandish costumes, I am able to communicate the urgency of my work, while infusing it with humor and the absurd.

It is becoming increasingly more important for me to confront my dependency on a system that causes so much irreversible damage to the planet. I attempt to find ways to implicate myself, and recognize my own weakness for abundant and excessive material use in the studio and in my life. Therefore, I am in the process of seeking out materials and subject matter that are selected with environmental consciousness and awareness. In this way, I seek to both define and to refine my relationship with the environment, and encourage the audience to investigate their own relationship with the planet.

Group Exhibition

PLACE is a concept so deeply entrenched in culture that it is impossible to give any straightforward definition of it. In the September 2006 group exhibition PLACE , eye lounge artists explore the meaning of place as it relates to geography, society, point of view, history, and fundamental philosophical questions.

This exhibit will run in conjuction with Arizona State University's New American City, and will feature the work of Aaron Abbot, Susan Copeland, Alison Dunn, Eric Eaglstun, Andrea Evans, Cindy Iverson, Cheryle Marine, Naomi Marine, Monica Martinez, Leigh Merrill, Doug Oland, Rebecca Ross, Gretchen Schermerhorn, Lisa Marie Sipe, Vivian Spiegelman, and Kate Timmerman.
