Of Self and Shadow

Wall installation of tintypes, silver gelatin, platinum-palladium, inkjet prints, vernacular photographs and ephemera

2020

(Member 2015 – 2018)

I have birthed many selves in my lifetime and experienced all but one die. Ego death happens in silent stages. I’ve watched my skin molt - shed like a snake. A symbol of death and rebirth. Identity is cyclical. We find our self over and over - through time and image and story. Each inquiry an opportunity to step into our shadow. Here we reclaim aspects of the self that have been forgotten. Here we release what no longer serves. Here we transform.

Ashley Czajkowski is an image-based artist working in a number of interdisciplinary methods. Driven by personal experience, her research explores social constructions related to femininity, mortality and the psychological manifestation of and the human-animal. Though situated in photography, Czajkowski's practice also incorporates video, installation, sound and alternative print processes, pushing the expected boundaries of the photographic art medium.
