“I Am My Ancestors,” combines reportage, self-portraiture and fictional narrative. It transports the viewer to a traditional European culture on a search for family history and cultural identity, asking questions about tradition, gender and immigration. It melds the photographer’s life with her grandparents, incorporating present-day situations with imagined realities. Emily Matyas’ images concern society, psychology and history. Her portfolio of life in rural Mexico is a bilingual book titled Sol y Tierra/Sun and Earth. Her MFA work, completed in 2002 at ASU, incorporates philosophical vignettes of family life. Her work is widely exhibited, collected and the recipient of three Julia Margaret Cameron Awards.
