Abbey Messmer (b. 1978) is a native Texan and graduate of University of North Texas. Messmer lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona as a fine artist and also Programming Director at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Messmer and local artists run a studio + exhibition space from a historic building on Grand Ave in downtown Phoenix called The Lodge. Messmer's exhibition experience includes showing at Phoenix Art Museum, Mesa Arts Center, Herberger Theater Center, PHX Sky Harbor Airport, MonOrchid and Fine Art Complex 1101. Messmer was a Contemporary Forum Arts Grant recipient in 2015. Since 2013, Messmer’s work has focused on water. Water is life. Water is meditation. Water is a portal to a parallel dimension. In an on-going series highlighting the organic mutations of the figure and landscape as seen from a subterranean aquatic vantage point, Messmer delights in lush colors, hypnotic undulations of form, and suggests the relative malleability of our reality.
