Susan Allred works with fibers because they’re an inextricable part of our everyday lives. Fibers are often considered humble materials since we wear them, clean our bodies with them and sleep under them. But they can also be elevated in form and meaning, as when we decorate our homes and our bodies with fiber to show what we admire and how we want to be seen by others.

Susan wants to change the way we think about the fiber in our daily lives. Each piece requires her to slow down, to be calm, to understand how the material can be coaxed to create the form she wants. She believes this quietness is expressed in a finished piece, and hopes that it will provides reflection, respite, and release for her viewers.
