Amanda Mollindo

Artist Statement

For too long, our ability to make reproductive decisions has been up for debate — that is, if we were given a choice to begin with. The fight for reproductive justice is more hostile than ever, and my work sits at the intersection of the past, present, political, and personal.

I have been interested in sharing the stories of people who have had marginalizing reproductive experience for nearly a decade. More recently, I have focused on photographing patients, providers, and advocates; researching the ancestral origins of reproductive care; and documenting state-funded institutions that spread misinformation about options for pregnant people. Combining the stories of people who are directly impacted with visuals that reference the convoluted and misunderstood history of reproductive healthcare, I hope to shed light on the systems of oppression that have created the barriers we experience today.

 Bio

Amanda Mollindo (she/her) is a Mexican-American artist who grew up in the borderlands of southwest Arizona. She uses photography to connect personal experiences to the social conditions that impact us collectively.

Amanda closely collaborates with community advocates and organizations to uplift marginalized voices through image-making, storytelling, and design. While her creative work currently focuses on reproductive justice, she has explored themes of family, place, and bodily autonomy since she was first introduced to photography as an art form in 2009.

Amanda received a BFA in Photography at Arizona State University in 2015 and currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona. Her work has been recognized by the Society for Photographic Education, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and more.
