For Buy One, Get One, Kazuma Sambe explores an element of our consumer culture, “quantity”. In the current social situation, quantity to some extent, has prevailed over quality in the market.
When pursuing Cheetos, Sambe saw Lays in the next aisle were buy one, get one free. His desire to the Cheetos is gone as he picked up the Lays. His pursuit to a quality has been defeated by the power of quantity. In order to guide the traffic of purchase, our perceptions have been strategically manipulated by market and “Buy one, Get one” is one of them. The desire for a product, hope for a quality, and satisfaction that was supposed to be obtained with the product is transformed into something manufactured by someone else.
For this exhibition at eye lounge, Sambe has created groups of sculptures that entertain viewers with the quantity which sometimes rather degrade the quality of the works, but satisfies our eyes.
Kazuma Sambe was born into a Japanese family in New York in 1984. When he was four, he moved to Japan for his education. In 2003, he came back to Tucson, Arizona for his bio chemistry study. He encountered ceramics and contemporary art for the first time in 2007, and it changed his life direction to enter the art realm. After obtaining a BFA at University of Arizona and an MFA in ceramics at Arizona State University, he stayed in the area for further creation and teaching in the local area.
