Cyd Peroni: The Amber of the Moment

In her second solo exhibition at eye lounge, Cyd Peroni presents a new series of gold leaf images that explores the solitude brought about by Covid-19 restrictions.

“First came an internal primal scream at the thought of being isolated for an undefined period of time,” says Peroni, “then I settled into a routine of exploring the flora I’d shot on previous travels as well as new images created while walking my rural neighborhood. Looking for something new each morning gave me a sense of control over my situation.”

The title of the exhibition is inspired by a quote from the novel “Slaughterhouse Five” by Kurt Vonnegut:

“Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.”

“I like this quote because it conveys the idea that there aren’t always answers or explanations for what happens in life,” she explains. “Initially, I had moments of fear because my husband is immunosuppressed. There were days of frustration, sadness, questioning, re-evaluating, and eventually peace (in some measure) and gratitude (in abundance).”

Navigating life, a bit complicated even in the best of times, moves Cyd Peroni to distill her images down to essential elements. The moments and objects she finds in the natural world often become metaphors in her art for love, loss, perseverance, hope, and always a sense of questioning. This current series in particular evokes a sense of singularity and survival.

For the last three years, she’s focused on making aurumprints (pigmented ink on translucent vellum paper over 24 kt gold leaf). Peroni feels that whatever way she chooses to print an image should help to convey the story or feeling she’s trying to create. Gold was selected for these images because of its symbolism and its ability to enhance the qualities that first drew her to each: a sense of the light and depth that added to their beauty and vulnerability.
