In her latest project, Kat Davis examines the convergence of individual lives within a relationship, as their experiences of the world diverge by difference in identity. As when tectonic plates collide, pushing to the surface a new landscape, so too do identities through the formation of a relationship. Yet as the topography transforms and unifies, the underlying structures maintain their difference.
Within the tectonics of her marriage, Davis constructs a life with her partner as her identity maintains the fault line and keeps her individuality. Terra Firma explores both the cooperation and conflict as two move through the world together. While the divergence in experience can be construed negatively, it demonstrates how we retain our individuality within a relationship and are placed in a position to swap stories and narratives about the way the world is, and how it could be.
