Craigslist is an interesting microcosm of humanity. On the same site in which you can rent an apartment, sell puppies, or find a job, one can anonymously profess the loss of an opportunity, a “Missed Connection”. These transitory posts only last for 45 days before being purged from the system. Even before that can transpire, posts are buried in a deluge of similar feeling.
Interspersed within the chronicles of “girl you looked so good in blue booty shorts at Walmart”, there exists a distinctive subset of these missed connections. Rather than being extollations to a stranger, they are directed toward specific individuals. These text posts read like short stories. Contained within all the dramas of humanity play out. Sadness over a broken heart. Anger at an unfaithful lover. Friendships that have drifted apart. And of course, unrequited love.
Along with these intimate declarations are attached maps. Specific locational points chosen by the individuals who wrote them. Following these maps to their end enabled finding connections through photography. To that feeling, to that individual, to the universality of connection and loss.
