Please join us at Eye Lounge Gallery for the opening of Summer Raine Young’s first solo exhibition See You, See Me, Friday July 21st from 6-9pm.
Summer Raine Young has used photography for many years as a way to navigate their queer, genderfluid identity and process experiences related to it. This collection of photographs, cyanotypes, and mixed-media highlights the duality of having a loving support system while also confronting judgment from others throughout the ten years that Young has been out.
Before Young moved to Phoenix in 2021, they grew up and lived in a small town outside of Baltimore that was quite conservative. Over time, their anxiety reached a point in which they were afraid to even leave the house because of how neighbors and strangers treated them, simply for their appearance. As much as we may try to create a safe environment for ourselves, it can take one person to break that comfort zone. To be seen, heard, and accepted is something each of us yearn for, and Young recognizes their privilege of having such a loving family to fall back on when discrimination feels especially heavy.
See You, See Me will be on view July 21st through August 13th. For more information on this show and Eye Lounge Gallery please visit our website at EyeLounge.com. Join the conversation on social media by following @eyeloungephx and @summyraine (Summer Raine Young) or using the hashtag #eyeloungephx
