Balancing experimentation with skilled craft I create sculptures that challenge expectations of function and notions of stability. Arranged, assembled and stacked, the work is held together by the weight of one object supporting another. The tenuous stability of the work acknowledges the temporary equilibrium of the present moment. Since earning her MFA from the University of Cincinnati, Christy Wittmer has worked in industry developing ceramic glazes, lived in Jingdezhen, China researching ceramic sculpture as part of a Fulbright grant, created cast brass sculptures in a residency at the Kohler Company and been a visiting artist at Australia National University. She teaches ceramics at Phoenix College and Chandler Gilbert Community College.
