Apophenia

Apophenia.jpg

APOPHENIA: a universal human tendency toward unmotivated seeing of patterns or connections between unrelated or random information; accompanied by a specific feeling of abnormal meaningfulness.

While waiting for an indeterminate time and an indeterminate outcome your mind plays tricks on you. These images taken intuitively, are products of fortuitous encounters. Much like the Gestalt phenomena in which an organized whole is perceivedas more than the sum of its parts, within these photographs I am ascribing meaning to random chaos. Further exploringhow perception and pattern recognition influences my personal reality.

Though seemingly random, these disparate images have been intentionally ordered. The first photograph in the exhibition, Time Travel, invites the work to be read like a visual journal, or rather journey. Placed in grids, the arrangements relate to each other not only in triptychs and diptychs, but can also be interpreted as small groups, asking viewers to make connections up and down as well as side to side.

This body of work is the outcome of four years of endeavoring to find narrative in everyday life.

As a visual artist, her interests lie in the division between the public persona and the private self. Her work also explores her fascination with the boundary between creation and curation. She is a member of Eye Lounge Gallery and artist collective in downtown Phoenix, as well as a founder of Femme Fotale, representing the talent and diverse skills of women and gender non-conforming artists through self-published zines. Kit currently lives, works, and sits on her roof in Tempe Arizona.
