Eye Lounge is pleased to present “Distance is Measured in Time,” an exhibition of new work by Rossitza Todorova.

In this collection of videos and sculptures, Rossitza Todorova explores feelings of disorientation and loss, representative of the artists coping with the recent passing of her father.

Todorova brings a new dimension to her print and sculptural work by including video. The artist considers these lonely and sometimes disorienting scenes to be an equivalent of her gestural drawings, capturing the inner stillness and feeling of absence associated with mourning.

Also included are simplified geometric sculptures that stand in for the fragility of grieving. “They give the feeling of being stripped bare— a shadow of one’s self,” Todorova said.

With this exhibition, Todorova is evoking the emotional numbness and ambiguity of trying to reconcile our feelings after the loss of a loved one. Todorova’s work often explores ideas of time, journey and the feeling of being in-between while using drawing, book forms, and installations. The recent family tragedy has pushed Todorova to distill the work into her essential visual vocabulary.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Todorova immigrated to the United States as a child. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005 and her Master of Fine Arts degree in Drawing from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, School of Art at Arizona State University in 2013. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona where she fundraises for the Phoenix Art Museum, and works in her home studio.

Exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, Rossitza Todorova’s artwork is in the permanent collections of the Arizona State University Art Museum in Tempe, Tucson Museum of Art, the University of Arizona Art Museum in Tucson, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, the Painting and Sculpture Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, and numerous private collections.

She is a recipient of the 2015 Phoenix Art Museum Contemporary Forum Artist Grant and was a 2013 Squire, Sanders Art Fellow.
Her work is featured in catalogs and publications including the 2013 Lark Crafts publication “500 Artists Books: Volume 2,” 2014 “Studio Visit Volume 25,” and 2016 “Superstition Review Journal, Issue 18.”
