Eye Lounge is pleased to present Of Bodies, Of Water, an exhibition of new work by artist Ellen Nemetz.
“The exhibition Of Bodies, Of Water, is focused on the importance of water in our arid-landscape. We rely on water as a fundamental necessity for life but also as an oasis of beauty, relaxation, and recreation.
Many of my cherished memories involve water. My paintings represent the enjoyment and enhanced well-being that comes from being in and around water. In this series, I hope to evoke the peace and serenity that I feel. The hypnotizing movements of water reflections for me are imbued with tranquility.
Ninety percent of the water used in Southern Arizona is provided by the Colorado River. My paintings follow the Colorado from Lake Havasu through Phoenix and on to the reprocessing of treated wastewater used to recreate wetlands and refill aquifers. Also included are paintings of Arizona surface water.
Water’s value in our desert environment cannot be overestimated. In The Water Diviner, Dannie Abse’s words resonate with my emotional reaction to living in the desert:
Late, I have come to a parched land
doubting my gift, if gift I have,
the inspiration of water
spilt, swallowed in the sand.
The beautifully colored reflections can be enjoyed as a visual experience or a metaphor for memory, but also relate to the necessity of water in all areas of our lives.” – Ellen Nemetz
