Susan Allred

During the Black Plague, doctors wore leather masks shaped like birds' heads into which they stuffed fragrant medicinal herbs. They believed that illness came from the miasma, which they called the fetid air rampant in infected cities. I created abstracted viruses for a tapestry and then adapted the design to custom hand-stamped and dyed fabric for a contemporary take on a Plague Doctor mask.

Contagion, 2020, Mixed Media, 12” x 9” (Tapestry) NFS / 24"H x 7"W x 10"D (Mask), $495
